Acute urinary retention in the first trimester of pregnancy due to uterine incarceration
Keywords:
acute urinary retention, pregnancy, uterine incarceration, transvaginal ultrasound, medical imagesAbstract
A 35-year-old patient, 11 weeks pregnant with monochorionic diamniotic twins, presented to the emergency department with inability to urinate. A transvaginal ultrasound revealed a retroverted uterus with two gestational sacs and two fetuses causing urethral and bladder neck compression, resulting in acute urinary retention. A bladder catheter was inserted and uterine position was subsequently reassessed. This clinical presentation corresponds to uterine incarceration, caused by trapping of the pregnant uterus between the promontory and the pubic symphysis.Downloads
